The aim of this paper is to analyze the performance of gold, bitcoin, and the S&P 500 index as investments during the period from 2014 to 2023. A historical overview and market dynamics provide insight into the evolution of gold, the emergence of bitcoin, and the characteristics of the S&P 500 index. The paper analyzes trends, investment returns, and the impact of non-systemic factors on investment performance, indicating the risk, volatility, and profitability of the observed investments. From 2014 to 2023, the return on investment in bitcoin was approximately 75.65 times higher than the return on investment in gold and approximately 33.55 times higher than the return on investment in the S&P 500 index, while the return on investment in gold was approximately 2.26 times lower than the return on investment in the S&P 500 index. Each investor makes their own decision on what constitutes an optimal portfolio, but applying investment strategies such as diversification and market timing strengthens the potential for increased stability, especially in volatile market conditions. Bitcoin has shown to add additional risk to a portfolio, but also significantly higher returns if included. Gold has served as a good foundation for any portfolio for decades, providing a certain level of security as it is not prone to significant loss of value. The S&P 500 index has also proven to be a quality long-term investment over the years, preserving the value of invested money. This can be attributed to its ability to provide competitive returns in line with the growth of the economy and its constituent companies.
